What the report shows

  • Every permit for the address going back up to three years, from the 23 North Carolina permit offices we read.
  • Each permit's work, status, filed, issued and expiry dates, and declared value, with the office's own status word explained in our permit glossary.
  • Who did the work: the contractor on each permit, with the phone, email and license number where the permit lists them.
  • A summary that flags permits issued with no final inspection on record, and ones withdrawn, rejected or expired: the questions to ask a seller or the office.
  • A page that stays up to date, and a PDF to save or send.

Permit history report: common questions

What's in the report?
Every building permit TarSignal holds for the address, newest first, going back up to three years (the report says from when: it depends on the office): the permit number, the kind of work and its description, the status the office gives it, when it was filed, issued and set to expire, the declared value, and the contractor with the phone, email and license number where the permit lists them. A summary at the top counts the permits finished with a final inspection, the ones issued with no final on record yet, and the ones withdrawn, rejected or expired. A few offices' records don't show final inspections or name contractors; when that's the case, the lookup says so before you pay.
Where do the permits come from?
From the public permit records of the 23 North Carolina permit offices TarSignal reads, collected every day. It isn't an official record or a title search: before relying on it for a purchase, confirm anything important with the permit office.
What if the address isn't found?
Then there's nothing to buy, and you're never charged: the count of permits on file shows before you pay. An address may have had no permitted work in the years we hold, sit outside the offices we read, or be written differently on its permits. Try it without the unit or with the street type spelled out.
How do I get the report after paying?
Stripe sends you straight to it, and we email you the link. The link is yours to keep: it shows the latest records each time you open it, and you can download the report as a PDF.
Can I get a refund?
Yes, if the report isn't for the address you meant or doesn't match what the office shows, email support@tarsignal.com within 7 days and we'll refund it in full.
