Who issues building permits in the Wilmington region

New Hanover County's permit system covers the City of Wilmington, unincorporated New Hanover and Carolina Beach, so one feed carries most of the work in the county.

New Hanover files trade permits on their own, and its commercial electrical permits each repeat the whole building's declared value — so add up building permits, or count buildings, rather than summing every permit's value.

Our New Hanover records are complete from August 17, 2026. Before that the county's public data only carried part of its permits, so read longer-run counts with that in mind.

Brunswick County, where most of the region's new homes are going up, issues permits outside the towns that run their own: Leland, Southport, Oak Island and the beach towns. Its records list each permit's builder and the home's estimated value.

We don't read Pender County permits yet, or those of Leland, Southport, Oak Island and the Brunswick beach towns. The Census counts below cover all of Brunswick and Pender.

Source: TarSignal, from North Carolina public building permit records, data through October 1, 2026. Refreshed nightly. Counts include every permit type a jurisdiction files — trade permits (electrical, plumbing, mechanical) as well as building permits — so one project can appear more than once. Values are what the applicant declared, where the jurisdiction records one. We keep improving how we collect each office's permits, so a count that steps up suddenly usually means more complete records, not more construction.
